About this Blog

I've been inspired by Academic and Philosophy Twitter to start a blog. I want it to be a record, of sorts, of my ongoing studies, but especially of reading I do related to my dissertation. I'm not sure how much extensive philosophizing I'll be doing on here--perhaps as I get more comfortable with it, more of my own philosophical writing will appear. For now, I'm interested in maintaining an ongoing list of books I read in 2019. I want to post a short, paragraph-or-so-long summary of each book I read, partly as a way to keep myself honest and productive, but also so that at the end of the year I can reflect back on my interests and reading patterns.

A lot of the reading I do is not books. I read academic journal articles, non-academic articles, magazines, newspapers, blog posts, and so on. The choice to focus on books is thus somewhat arbitrary, I admit. But something about it feels right and proper. Reading a book feels like more of an accomplishment than reading one of the others, and the experience is often more transformative for me. Occasionally, journal articles have induced transformative experiences--I end up seeing the world in a markedly different way after the reading. If and when this happens in 2019, I may write up a summary as well.
